We love local: Cotteswold Dairy

Here at The Cottage in the Wood we love local. Continuing our delve into our suppliers’ backgrounds, we caught up with the multi-award winning Cotteswold Dairy to find out more about their ethos.

Cotteswold Dairy is a thriving independent, family-run dairy business, founded in 1938 by Harry Workman. Now led by the third generation, George, the ethos of quality, service, and family values are at the heart of what Cotteswold Dairy do every day.

We talked to George about keeping age-old values alive while maintaining a thriving business in the modern world: “We pride ourselves in working closely with local farmers, many of whom have been our partners for decades and this consistency of supply ensures that we have shared ideals and passion for the quality of our milk and cream. All suppliers are located within a 50-mile radius of our main dairy site in Tewkesbury, and they all carry the Red Tractor status, assuring food safety, animal welfare, hygiene and environmental protection throughout the food chain.

Provenance is a fundamental part of dairy production that often gets side-lined. Many people think that all cows live in fields, however less cows now enjoy the freedom to graze on lush pastures, and big dairies mix their milk from hundreds of farms denying consumers the chance to choose the origin of their milk.

However, at Cotteswold Dairy we offer that choice and assurance.
We are also members of the organic farmers and growers, have partnered with the Free-Range Dairy Network and are part of the Pasture Promise, which is independently certified to provide a clear declaration that cows are free to graze in fields for at least 180 days a year, ensuring our products retain the best possible taste.

We have won an abundance of product awards, including Great taste and Taste of the West. Most recently, our Greek Style Yogurt was selected as the best dairy product in the Great British Food Awards, and our quality, service and family values have also allowed us to receive many business awards over the last few years.”

Cotteswold Dairy’s ethos wholly reflects our values at 1919 Bar & Restaurant, aiming to produce locally-sourced, delicious creations that celebrate the abundance of quality available on both our doorsteps. Come and sample some of the dairy’s delicious produce with our spectacular afternoon tea, including a selection of sandwiches, scones, patisseries, jams and of course clotted cream, and add a little fizz with a glass of Pol Roger Champagne.
